Media Analysis 2

Queens of the Stone Age – No One Knows

No One Knows is a very highly conceptualised music video with sections of band performance. This would be a nice idea for our music piece, but from what I have seen, to get a good quality conceptualised video you would have to spend a lot of time/money to get the result that would be acceptable, and because our money budget is next to nil we can’t do it that way and because we will be pushed for time it will be hard to get the quality we would like. When the band is on screen we see them play their instruments and like most rock videos it’s about them showcasing their talent with the musical instruments for the viewer to see. Again like Cage the Elephant there is a split between band time performing and the rest of the video.

The video is about 4 minutes long which is a bit longer than the song of our choice because its roughly 3 minutes long, but it lets me see what other types of videos there are out there, in some cases in longer songs the whole music video can change. This song is quite good to look at because it has similarities to the song we want to do, the song is quite upbeat and the song is fairly solemn, this is very similar to Bullet by Hollywood Undead, the song that we want to do for our music piece, Bullet is also quite upbeat and cheery even though it is in fact about suicide, which is not something to be upbeat about. At beginning of the video we see the band playing their instruments, the background has been removed and we see a hint glow around the band and what they’re doing, this lets the audience focus on what they’re doing and it won’t let them look at anything else because there isn’t, so it grabs the eye and doesn’t let go. There is no correlation between the lyrics of the song and what is being sung compared to what is on screen, this is why it’s a conceptualised video, because there is little to nil similarities between words and video. But like I have mentioned in my analysis of Cage The Elephant’s video A’int No Rest for the Wicked, the fact that its conceptualised grabs the viewers attention because they can be so interesting and out of the ordinary and not what we are used to seeing and most of the time can be the most fun to watch because they are so vivid and dynamic in their range of what they do.

The colours and lighting in the music video are used to the advantage of the song and make it much more entertaining to watch, the colours are all quite bright and shiny when the camera is focused on the band while they’re playing their instruments, it makes it quite interesting to look at rather than just a stage, you can notice patterns on the backgrounds as well which again add to this effect. The colours are quite realistic when it goes to the concept side of the video but they’re not needed to be bright when we are watching the conceptualised side of the song because it already grabs our attention because it’s so out of the ordinary.

The editing used in this video relate and match the song just like they do in the Cage The Elephant video, when the lyrics and tempo of the song pick up so does the pace and atmosphere of the video, it gets a bit more rapid and wild to watch, this happens throughout the video. For example in the video, the bands (minus the drummer) are on the road and this switches back and forth with them playing the song, eventually they hit a deer and the pattern is still the same, until the song picks up a bit and becomes a bit more upbeat at which point the deer gets back up and beats up the band and drives off with them strapped to the roof, the song then slows down a bit and then the song goes back into the pattern until it picks up again, at which point the editing is a lot faster and the camera movements are a lot faster.

This video is entertaining to watch because of these reasons and makes it a good music video because of it, it makes the viewer want to watch and listen to it again because its generally a nice song to listen to and watch, combined with the way it’s made and edited it makes it unusual and therefore interesting to watch.
