Mrs d

There are some good ideas here Dom. How are you presenting this? You need more audience feedback than just one eg from which ancillary a few people preferred.

Evaluation - First Draft

Codes and conventions:
-Used lots of close ups on the band and the instruments they use, very common in modern bands and music videos, helps establish faces and image for the audience to have.
-A mixture of narrative and performance, common in indie songs and rock songs, helped us familiarise the audience with the genre and our music video.
-Used a lot of contrast in colours between performance and narrative to separate the two and make a clear decision of what is what, helps flow on the music video and lets audience follow it easier and enjoy it more.
-Large shots and wide shots of the band to create their image, this can also be done with separate close ups. This is common. This can also be done through the use of costumes and props, in our music video the band all wore flannels, through this we created the band image, because it gave the audience something to recognise us with and let them have this ‘band image’ in their head.
-Blurs and fades, not quite as common in music videos, but it allowed us to play on the contrast between the two sides of the music video allowing us to make a much more clear difference between narrative and performance, helps audience follow the video.
-But we also wanted to keep this idea that the band were playing at the boys house who we featured in the narrative, to do this we kept the garage the we played in quite messy and un-prepared like they were playing in the boys garage. We wanted a separation between narrative and performance to get a much more clear flow in the video but we wanted to make a link between the two, in the narrative the band were guardian angles looking over the boy, and that the band were playing at his house and when ever something bad was going to happen to the boy the band would be there to stop him, we tried to do this through the use of the messy garage, showing that they were close by and looking over him.
-The band is in the narrative as well as the performance; this is common in almost every music video where performance and narrative are used, whether it is pop, rock, metal or rap. Most artists will be in their music video. We wanted them to feature in both sides of the music video because it helped the audience capture this ‘band image’ in their head, if we chose not to have them in the narrative the video would have still worked and still made sense, but it would be harder for the audience to follow, the use of band members helps the audience feel more comfortable with the video if they see if a familiar face, from this they will then be able to enjoy it more.
-We used lots of short cuts as the music picks up and gets more fast paced which is a technique used in a lot of rock / indie music videos.
-In the Outro section of song, the band stops playing and leaves. Flashbacks and slow mos are used, more apparently in slowly melody songs. Challenges codes and conventions for an upbeat song. We did this to make it fit the rest of the song, we didnt want a completley different style ending.

Technologies used
Photoshop, Blogger, Vegas 8.0
We used Sony Vegas 8.0 on a laptop; we decided to do all our editing on a laptop because it gave us the option of editing where we filmed, and editing in school. This also allowed us to work on our ancillarys in school. During the editing process on the laptop of our main task I did editing and sequencing on the area where I am singing and featured, I also did some of lip syncing in the music video, and I did some work in the other areas, one idea I contributed to the group was to black and white the narrative, I decided that this would be a good idea because it separated performance from narrative, creating a much easier video to follow and watch, however because I wasn’t as good as Calum or Lewis in editing I only gave the idea and allowed them to edit it and make it black and white, so because I was only experienced in the basics of Vegas it was decided that I would focus on the majority of the basics like lip syncing and sequencing, Calum and Lewis did the more advanced stuff like colour correction, fading, blurring and black and white and correcting the tones in that.
Blogger was good because it allowed us to of course upload from home and have a digital workplace which would be much more organised than working on word and printing off work and handing things in, but what It also allowed us to do was collect audience feedback and get different views on our media piece, this allowed us to create a better final product in the main task and ancillarys, an example of this would be our choice in the ancillary design on our magazine page, we got feedback on what people preferred and what they didn’t.
A canon Digital SLR was used to take pictures for the ancillary.
Photoshop CS4 was used for the editing process of the photo’s where Lewis would make large contrasts and add to distinguish the person from background, and the magic wand tool was used to select the people, then a Gaussian blur was used to make the outline smoother and then he would turn them black and white, he did this because he was more comfortable than I or Calum in the skills of Photoshop. Calum and I would then edit the pictures and arrange them with input from Lewis.

Main Task and Ancillary
The ancillary was done in pure black and white without grey scale, while for our main task we had black and white and we also had shades of grey. And when it came to the performance section Lewis layered in a colour correction, we did this to get a much deeper contrast like in the ancillary, but the colour scheme of the ancillary was more related to the song, it was a very happy upbeat song, with a very depressing meaning, very black and white, no middle, just the two extremes.

Audience feedback
We couldn’t decide on our poster and it was constantly changing, to solve this problem (because it was taking too much time) we took our two most favourite versions and we asked for audience feedback on which one they preferred and why they did.

After talking to people about which one they prefer, we finally chose one, which was the version with the text wrapping around the people, they preferred this because it look more professional and stood out a bit more. This was the same problem with our CD cover, we had two versions but after asking people we found out that across both the album and the poster that the text wrapping was more popular.
