Advanced key frame animation

When we handed in and posted our storyboard Idea we were told that we hadnt done enough and we needed to add more detail to the timings aswell as the step by step frames, so we decided to split into 2 groups, because I live 5 minutes away from Lewis and Calum lives futher away we decided that Lewis and I would draw more of the story board and do more details on the timing while Calum was going to animate the frames and make it into a video. I decided this was best and then we decided on it as a group when I put forward the idea.

Title Fonts and Title Name

These are two of the fonts I really liked which I felt stood out and suited the genre, I have chosen the name of "Promisis Of A Broken Dream" because I like the name and I feel it also suits the genre, I need to think of more names, but out of the 4 I had decided Previously (Dark Days Bright Nights, Promises Of A Broken Dream, Cruel Days Peaceful Nights, Dreams of Freedom)

I like Dreams Of Freedom because it feels very patriotic which the band are known to be, this suits my planning of the ancilary because I said in that I would like to use a flag of some type, this way I could have the Union Jack flag as a album cover.

The fonts I used are 1. Erosion, 2. Cold Nights

Over the past few days

Over the past few days I and Lewis have been making a more detailed story board timing of the video, we are going through second by second of the song and been deciding with the help of Calum what we want to have in each cut. I and Lewis have done the main work on it and put in the most ideas and Calum has helped with them, but overall we have decided on it as a group. I have come up with examples like panning around the garage and getting a view of all the band.

Ancillary ideas continued, more detail needed

Advertising ideas in magazine,(above)

Album names

Has to be something related to the songs/style of band, their albums covers that they use are quite patriotic with an american flag, or the band or both. Idea just to call the album "Bullet" or "Chasing dreams" - Something to do with the main song "Bullet", which we had to change to make it have a dream state where anything could happen, so something to do with dreams or related to the main song.

How research will infrom planning

Through my research I will be able help input into the planning stage where we design our final product, this is due to the research I have made and the comparisons and summary's I have reached and made.. Using the questionnaires we have made we can have a look and the analysis we have made we can look at what people want in a music video and what is already out there and what is popular and most effective. We can then apply this to our own music video and make a good video. We can also find out what target audience we should be aiming for and how much we expect to reach and should target.

The research stage of the production will help us greatly as we will can have different views on the video then just our own and so we get a wide range and then have different conclusions and comparisons and then hopefully have different techniques found, and then increase the amount of people who we reach.

Sorry I thought I had uploaded this earlier but It didnt post.

Mrs D

There is some good detail here Dom and you are well on your way to completing your research. Where is your research informing planning and why have you analysed magazine front covers? Miss Dolby has already reminded you about the brief.

Product placement

In our group we decided to focus on the genre of rock/alternative. The use of e-commerce in promoting music vidoes and song has proven to be very effective. Companies have access to an audience of billions and can often be done for free.

Part of my research showed that a lot of companies promoted their new videos using free third party websites such as YouTube and social networking sites such as Facebook, they often on YouTube have links to their faicebook page, twitter page or thier website. These methods are effective because they are free and have millions of people who log in to them every day. So there is a potential of having millions of people view adverts for their song and then listening to it because they liked the sample or are just interrested. So if we were to use the internet to promote our video we could decide to create groups on social networking sites and youtube and promote our video that way.

Advertising songs on TV and in cinemas has proven to be quite effective as well, it can be done purley as an advert or a score for a movies. When advertsing albums on TV channels, the advert has potential access to billions of people. A larger audience usually means larger responses and therefore a larger profit margin.

The use of still image advertising in magazines has been found to be the most effective and the most used. Its used the most because it targets the audience that the comapnies know will be interested, its a sure way to get people to listen to your song, most people are willing to try new things and so when they read it in a magazine they will think to look at it, and ofcoure they would be inclined to check it out if it was on the front cover.

Questionnaire Results

1. This was my first question, it helps me understand later in my results what target audience we should be aiming for.

2. This will again (like the first one) help me when I get my later results and helps me understand what type of audience we should be aiming for, I decided not to ask anyone under 13 because I felt they would be too young for the type of music we were looking at, so in hindsight this question was very much pointless.

3. Whats your favourite genre of music?
For this question I didn’t put down any choices, I wanted to see what people truly liked and didn’t give them a chance to look at other ideas they may not have thought of because they didn’t truly like it but as soon as they saw it may have influenced them, this may have not worked but even if it didn’t I still got the results so changing the formant of the question was good. The results I got were people in the age range of 14-19 enjoyed all types of music, I had 5 say rap. 14 say rock/alternative (I decided to do this because from the beginning of working in my group we had an idea of what we wanted to do and these two were the main themes - I also did this in my media analysis) So that was the most popular which was a good sign. 5 say pop. And finally 1 say metal.
In the 20-25 range I had 6 say rock/alternative, another good sign and 1 say rap.
In 26+ I had 2 say rock/alternative.
Genders did not really play a part on choice apart from in 14-19 when 4 females said pop and 2 said rap. So perhaps we should aim more at the male gender in our planning, but we should not stray away from the other gender because they enjoy it just as much, considering the amount in that age range I was bound to have a wider amount of views.

4. What colours would you expect to see in your genre of music?
For this answer I mainly looked at the rock/alterative section because from my results I saw that’s what people were most interested in, so the general answer I got was black, white, red, but I got all types of other colours as well, I asked a few people why they wrote what they wrote and they said because rock is the main genre and it’s just normal people that
Play it and listen to it, but the main answers were red, white and black, with blue and dark colours in other places.

5. What’s your favourite band?
This question was very broad with no real answer with just a few people choosing the same band/artist. This question may perhaps be un-necessary, but when I have done questionnaires previously writing and answer them I have found it gets the person answering it to think about their answers, previous and later to come, it’s just a nice question to ask and get people thinking.

6. With this question the answers were all across the board. So this is where I can use my questions of age and gender to look deeper into the answers, though they did not help this time, it seemed everyone liked everything, even when looking into what type of genre they liked the answers were again across the board, perhaps if I specified the question to ‘What type of music video do you think suits your favourite genre of music the best’
Though through my Media Analysis I can see that most rock/alternative videos cover the 3 sections, though all the 3 types of video change with each genre of music video and the song.

7. What’s your favourite music video?
The same result as question 5, but the same reason. Perhaps it would have been better before the question above because it may have influenced what they truly like. Hard to get an answer because of the many band before this time which people still listen to and just the variety of bands and videos we have today, very hard to get a basic answer for this.

8. How often do you watch music videos?
The most pointless question, no real influence on later results or planning, just a question to ask, results mainly every other day or every 3 days.

9. When I asked this question I added 1 thing, I split it up into these time sections which I forgot to add. I also asked where they thought rock/alternative should go (I did this because this was the genre that most people favoured and because that’s the one my group wanted to look at) the answer I got was that it completely depended on the song when I was handed them back in most cases, but they still answered, with 10 saying 3 minutes, 11 saying 3 and a half, 12 saying 4 minutes and 2 saying 4 and a half. Through asking this question I found out most people thought a range of 3-4 minutes was the best length with the same answer for rock, so this helped me choose songs later in my media analysis.

10. This question will help with advertising and what we could possibly add in advertising, like “Now On ITunes” or “Free on YouTube on our channel”, so this will help with later research

Dolby

Please check the brief carefully. It calls for a magazine advert for the digipack, not a poster.

Dolby

Dom- make sure you know what concept video actually means- a concept is an idea but a conceptualised video is one that doesn't really conform to a basic narrative where visuals match lyrics or performance. Not many videos are concept-based so I would make sure that if you are deciding on it you have a strong case as they are hard to pull off well and depend on the genre of music.

Focus Group

On Friday I asked a group of 6 what they thought of the music video “Memories” by Weezer

What were your first impressions of the video? (Up to the end of the first chorus)
For this question the answer was roughly the same, they all shared the view that it was going to be quite cheery and upbeat (Which was the same thought I had when I watched it). There were also answers like they liked the lighting and the way clips from Jackass were included and when the chorus was played they like seeing everyone sing along. I had a few answers like the lighting and the camera were a bit weird and different but they enjoyed it because it was something new, but the overall result was that they enjoyed the first minute.

What do you think of the band, how do they look to you? What do you see when you look at them?
First Impressions were a bit different, 2 of the people thought they looked quite pop due to the way they dressed, but they still thought they were rock/alternative just because of the instruments used and the song, so it was a mixed reaction to the way they dressed from 2 people. The other answers were that they looked very alternative and again they thought they were rock/alternative because of the sound of the song and the instruments, this was a good sign, it meant that they looked like what they sounded like, so it told me that dressing a certain way changes what people think of you, this will be useful when doing our piece because now we know we have to look the part perfectly.

What do you think of the song?
General comments such us they enjoyed it and it was a really nice song and it was catchy and was very easy to sing along with if you were listening to it on your iPod or with some friends (even though none of them did). Other comments on the song is it suited the video and was really happy and just a nice song. 1 person didn’t enjoy the song as much as others rating it a bit lower on a scale of 1 to 10, but still said he enjoyed it, so this showed this type of song appealed to most, so this will help us in the choice of song we use.

Do you like the video and the way it’s made?
Again good comments like all the others, they enjoyed the effect on the camera and the way it was handheld like it would be at a party with friends, they said it felt very real and made it more enjoyable because they saw everyone having fun, though 1 person said it was a bit of a strain on the eye and a bit weird to watch. The group also enjoyed the way clips from the film were used and made the idea of “memories” feel so much more real and better, not everyone knew that a member had died, so I felt some people enjoyed it more while others didn’t but overall they enjoyed it. The fact they enjoyed it more because a member had died shouldn’t really be included because it could have changed their thoughts, but overall mood was enjoyment.

Would you change anything?
This answer was split a bit with 2 people saying yes and 4 saying no, the 2 people who said yes said that they would prefer a more concept video for this piece but still that they enjoyed the song but not as much as they could. Which was a bit of a shock to me because I enjoyed it the way it was and so did the other 4, no other real comments apart from they enjoyed the atmosphere of it and the song.

This has helped me understand what people are looking for; if they enjoy the look and feel of the music video and the band in it it changes their opinion on the song and makes it enjoy it more. Because “Bullet” by Hollywood Undead is so different from anything else in its genre it will be hard to make and please because we don’t know what people are exactly looking for, but this has given me and idea of what we can do to try and please people, like costumes, camera work, effects and the way the band is and how they act...for example singing together.

The Magazines

I chose to do these two magazines to get a much clearer view on what was effective and what was not and what would be the best to do, from this I have seen that the Queens of the stone age magazine is a lot more eye catching than the weezer one, but the weezer one is still very good, so from comparing these two, just like the album/cd covers, I have a better idea of what would be effective and what would be the most effective and time worthy to make. This will help with time organisation and design, so from this I can tell that if we could combine the two, perhaps a pose with stylised writing which stands out and screams rock with maybe some ‘sex, drugs, rock and roll’ kind of pictures, we could have a very effective poster, which wouldn’t take ages to do and we could use editing to make it stand out more.

These could be easily turned into an advert for a tour or selling a song, you could roughly use the same image, keep some of the headings, put a picture of the Album on it and change the formant of it all if you wanted to do a advert in the magazine rather than on it.

Album Covers

I decided to chose an album cover and a single’s cover to see how different they are, single’s covers are quite purely for 1 song while album covers represent a whole bunch on songs so the design will be different. From doing this I have learned that CD covers can be very stylised due to they only cater one song, so they can be very vivid and link back to the song while album cover have to just represent the band and their genre so sometimes have to be quite simple but clear. This will now help us make a clear choice in what we did and it will help us focus on one thing because now we know we can’t stylise the cover too much because we’re doing an album cover, because we will need it to represent the band and its genre. This comparison will help shape the final product.

Media Analysis 3 - A different view

Weezer – Memories – A music video from Jackass 3D

For my final look at what is out there I decided to look at something a little different, Weezer have two music videos, a more official music video which is done in a more narrative way with animation concept, where animation and lyrics fly on screen and the other one which I have chosen to look at, it does feature Weezer and isn’t fan made, so really it can be seen as their music video for this song as well. The music video is simply stage performance mixed with video clips from a party Weezer had with the Jackass crew, it could be viewed as a narrative performance though it wasn’t a performance, it was just clips from the film and clips filmed on a camera, it can be considered narrative because of the song and its main theme of “Memories” and wishing to go back there.

The song is roughly 3 minutes long, which is ideal to look at because anything in the 3-4 minute range is in the same time category as the song that we want to do. The song is very upbeat and cheery; this song has the same similarity to Queens of the Stone Age “No one knows! and Hollywood Undead “Bullet”, the songs are all fairly upbeat but use different lyrics and situations which make the song and change the beat and happiness of the song, while Queens of the Stone Age and Hollywood Undead sing about death and make the song upbeat the audience still get a sense of death in it, while Weezer is singing about memories which were good and which would make you want to go back there, this goes perfectly with the video because on June 20th 2011 one of the members of Jackass died, roughly half a year after the making of the movie, so the way the song is sung is meant to be upbeat and cheery with the idea that they could go back and enjoy those memories all over again makes it a nice concept and honorary because one of their friends died. This is why I have chosen to review this video because it’s a nice concept and still perfect to review due to the nature of the song, the tone and the length along with everything else. From the very first seconds of the video the audience’s attention is grabbed, the audience hear the sound of the instruments and the tone of the song and instantly like it because it’s so nice, even if you didn’t know one of their members dies you would still feel the same way about the song because of the clips it uses and just the ways it’s made and the way it all works together.

When the chorus of
Memories make me want to go back there, back there
All the memories make me want to go back there, back there
All the memories, how can we make it back there, back there
I want be there again
The audience gets clips of the whole gang singing and having a good time, which again make the audience feel good and happy, making the video and song all the more better because it makes the audience want to sing a long, especially when the lyrics are so easy to remember.

The camera is quite jittery throughout; this is because it’s handheld and adds the effect that these people are just the same as everyone else, just friends who enjoy each other’s company and memories, we can then relate to this which makes the video more understandable. The camera just tracks the group throughout the clip and gets everyone’s smile in it again adding to the effect.

The colours and lighting in this video are all quite bright and have a certain glare about them which you would get from a home video camera, this is probably due to the time that it was filmed and where it was, it was just filmed outside on a summer day where they couldn’t control lighting, again this adds to the effect that this group is normal and adds to the enjoyment and believability of the video which only adds to the enjoyment of it. There was some special effects used to change the grain and look of the video, it adds an effect which changes the look of the video to have the effect of a late 90’s early 2000’s camera detail level, the hue of it is quite orange and grainy which we could expect from a camera of this time, but this adds to the idea of “memories” because it makes it feel like it was a long time ago.

The editing in this video is different to all the other ones I have looked at because throughout the song the same upbeat happy rhythm and voice is kept, this is good because it’s the same case in Hollywood Undead’s song Bullet which we plan to do, so it gives me a chance to look at what the video we make could be like and gives me a better understanding of what we could do and how effective it could be.

Why I chose the vidoes I did

I chose to look at these videos because I feel that they all have a similarity of the chosen songs to "Bullet" by Hollywood Undead, they're all quite indie and not the usual rock/pop that you get, they are all different, they all have stage performances but have differences in how they're done and what they're accompanied by, whether it be concept or narrative.

I feel out of all of these clips I think Weezer "Memories" is the best to look at as an example, because it is most similar to "Bullet", its upbeat throughout but gives us a look at what can be done with almost no budget, while the others had many effects and mise en scene, "Memories" had no mise en scene, it was just filmed on a normal camera at a party with clips from Jackass 3D. It’s the most realistic of the 3 and really gives insight on what can be done, I also feel that it’s the most enjoyable of the 3 just because of the song and the way the video is made

Media Analysis 2

Queens of the Stone Age – No One Knows

No One Knows is a very highly conceptualised music video with sections of band performance. This would be a nice idea for our music piece, but from what I have seen, to get a good quality conceptualised video you would have to spend a lot of time/money to get the result that would be acceptable, and because our money budget is next to nil we can’t do it that way and because we will be pushed for time it will be hard to get the quality we would like. When the band is on screen we see them play their instruments and like most rock videos it’s about them showcasing their talent with the musical instruments for the viewer to see. Again like Cage the Elephant there is a split between band time performing and the rest of the video.

The video is about 4 minutes long which is a bit longer than the song of our choice because its roughly 3 minutes long, but it lets me see what other types of videos there are out there, in some cases in longer songs the whole music video can change. This song is quite good to look at because it has similarities to the song we want to do, the song is quite upbeat and the song is fairly solemn, this is very similar to Bullet by Hollywood Undead, the song that we want to do for our music piece, Bullet is also quite upbeat and cheery even though it is in fact about suicide, which is not something to be upbeat about. At beginning of the video we see the band playing their instruments, the background has been removed and we see a hint glow around the band and what they’re doing, this lets the audience focus on what they’re doing and it won’t let them look at anything else because there isn’t, so it grabs the eye and doesn’t let go. There is no correlation between the lyrics of the song and what is being sung compared to what is on screen, this is why it’s a conceptualised video, because there is little to nil similarities between words and video. But like I have mentioned in my analysis of Cage The Elephant’s video A’int No Rest for the Wicked, the fact that its conceptualised grabs the viewers attention because they can be so interesting and out of the ordinary and not what we are used to seeing and most of the time can be the most fun to watch because they are so vivid and dynamic in their range of what they do.

The colours and lighting in the music video are used to the advantage of the song and make it much more entertaining to watch, the colours are all quite bright and shiny when the camera is focused on the band while they’re playing their instruments, it makes it quite interesting to look at rather than just a stage, you can notice patterns on the backgrounds as well which again add to this effect. The colours are quite realistic when it goes to the concept side of the video but they’re not needed to be bright when we are watching the conceptualised side of the song because it already grabs our attention because it’s so out of the ordinary.

The editing used in this video relate and match the song just like they do in the Cage The Elephant video, when the lyrics and tempo of the song pick up so does the pace and atmosphere of the video, it gets a bit more rapid and wild to watch, this happens throughout the video. For example in the video, the bands (minus the drummer) are on the road and this switches back and forth with them playing the song, eventually they hit a deer and the pattern is still the same, until the song picks up a bit and becomes a bit more upbeat at which point the deer gets back up and beats up the band and drives off with them strapped to the roof, the song then slows down a bit and then the song goes back into the pattern until it picks up again, at which point the editing is a lot faster and the camera movements are a lot faster.

This video is entertaining to watch because of these reasons and makes it a good music video because of it, it makes the viewer want to watch and listen to it again because its generally a nice song to listen to and watch, combined with the way it’s made and edited it makes it unusual and therefore interesting to watch.

Media Analysis 1 - Music Video

Cage the elephant – Ain’t No Rest for the Wicked

Ain’t No Rest for the Wicked is a highly unusual music video with elements of performance and narrative. This would be ideal for our idea for our music video. We want a roughly equal percentage of band time and narrative acting time. This music video mainly showcases narrative but there are bits in the music video where the band performs and plays its instruments.

The video is about 3 minutes long which is ideal for my media analysis because that would be the ideal time for our piece, so it gives me a chance to look at what can be done within 3 minutes. At beginning the video starts off very slowly, this matches the tempo of the song at the beginning which is quite slow compared to bits later in the video, when the tempo is picked up we usually see the band performing showcasing their talent and how they are doing what you are hearing, this is a perfect idea for a media piece, because you get to see the narrative video of what they’re singing and then you see them perform. Sections in the video are often repeated, which matches the song, A’int No Rest for the Wicked, it repeats the idea that this ‘state’ won’t end until they close their eyes for good and give in, this accompanied with the mise en scene creates this idea of a wasteland where life is a misery and again works well with the lyrics to create this music video, this lyrics in this song match the visuals most of them time apart from when the chorus is repeated, this is when we see the band play, the song is also picked up at these points when its song and we see the band play, other times we see what the band is singing about.

The colours and lighting in the music video are also used to create this idea of a wasteland and Ain’t No Rest for the Wicked, the colours and special effects are all quite dull, grainy, such colours are mainly brown, yellow and the lighting is quite bright and reflective off the colours, again creating this idea of this wasteland they’re in. The special effects add another layer which is film grain filter creating an old style feel to the whole music video, the special effects are quite obviously done on a green screen, this is stands out a lot and we can see its quite obviously done to grab the audiences eye, it makes the video feel like an old movie where backgrounds would be quite obvious, creating the idea that the wasteland is cut off from modern life, it catches the viewers eye.

The camera angles and techniques and editing used in this video also relate and match the song, at the beginning of the song its starts off quite slow and you see the narrative side of the video, the camera angles and techniques used here also match this, when the songs tempo is down so is the speed of the editing, but the lyrics change this in some place and then so does the speed of the editing, when the singer sings faster the editing picks up faster and the camera movements are more rapid and wild.

This music video is narrative which lets the audience understand the song more, it allows them to see the band in a new way and it lets them see what the band is thinking while singing the song, this video can also be considered as a conception video due to the way it’s made and the way it’s filmed which makes it a fun and entertaining video to watch and view. It can be considered as a concept video because its mise en scene and lighting, because they are done the way they are it makes it seem very idealist and meant to be that way. The more concept the video the more is the more entertaining it is to watch because it has a deeper meaning and sometimes make the video more colourful and vibrant and changes the whole layout and idea of the video.

There is also another theme in this music video which is not so apparent but still links in with the wasteland idea, the video is about why people do what they do, the vidoes showcases people robbing the band and doing things to get money off them, the idea of the wasteland still comes in because it’s about how people get through life and the world they're in is just a desert with people trying to make their way.
